Artificial intelligence is no longer just a buzzword in the office. A new Gallup survey shows that 12% of American workers now use AI every single day in their jobs, up from just 4% in mid-2023. In only about two and a half years, daily AI usage in the workplace has tripled, while weekly and occasional use has more than doubled.
The shift was already underway before the latest wave of AI workplace tools grabbed headlines, showing adoption is quietly becoming part of everyday workflows.
Tech Workers Are Way Ahead of Everyone Else
Unsurprisingly, the tech sector is leading the charge. Nearly one in three tech employees report using AI daily, far above the national average. Compare that with government, public policy, and community or social services roles, where only about 8% of workers say they use AI every day.
Where you work matters just as much as what you do. In some industries, AI is quickly becoming a standard productivity tool, while in others it remains barely visible.
Half the Workforce Still Hasn’t Touched It
Despite the rapid growth, AI is far from universal. Nearly half of US workers, 49%, say they never use AI in their roles at all. That highlights a widening gap between professions that are being reshaped by automation and those that have so far been largely untouched.
In fact, some blue-collar sectors are seeing renewed demand in the AI era, as hands-on roles that cannot easily be automated gain fresh attention while knowledge work gets increasingly augmented by software.
