Amazon $AMZN ( ▲ 0.87% ) and Google $GOOGL ( ▲ 0.72% ) are teaming up in a rare partnership after AWS suffered a major outage in October that disrupted Snapchat, Reddit, Roblox, Venmo, United Airlines, and more. As enterprises continue shifting critical infrastructure to AWS or Google Cloud, the stakes of a single-vendor outage keep rising.
To reduce that risk, the two rivals launched a multicloud networking standard that lets customers shift data and services between AWS and Google Cloud in minutes. The system removes complex physical networking requirements and allows instant failover between platforms.
AWS VP of network services Robert Kennedy called the collaboration a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity, saying customers can now avoid the “heavy lifting” traditionally required to secure high-availability links between cloud providers.
