Amazon’s AWS division $AMZN ( ▲ 0.87% ) is gearing up to unveil updated versions of its in-house Nova AI models at its re:Invent conference in Las Vegas this week. The cloud giant remains the dominant provider of AI compute and is a key partner for enterprise favorite Anthropic, but it’s now pushing deeper into building its own models.

AWS posted 20 percent year-over-year revenue growth last quarter and is working through a massive $200 billion backlog of cloud commitments. Developing its own models is a way to reduce reliance on external providers and cut costs as AI workloads scale.

The Information reports that the upcoming Nova update will be AWS’s first true “all-in-one” multimodal model. That adds a new layer to an already complicated relationship with Anthropic, which relies heavily on AWS infrastructure even as Amazon becomes more of a direct competitor in the AI model race.
