Apple is finally upgrading Siri from “voice assistant that sets timers” into an actual chatbot.
Bloomberg reports that Apple $AAPL ( ▲ 0.28% ) is preparing to transform Siri into a full conversational AI, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but built directly into iOS instead of being a separate app.
This is Apple admitting the obvious: the future is chat-first interfaces, and Siri can’t keep playing 2014 defense.
From assistant to chatbot (big shift)
Apple’s plan is to evolve Siri into something that behaves like a full chatbot, not just an assistant that answers one-off commands.
That sounds like a subtle change, but it’s not.
Assistants are transactional:
“Set alarm.”
“Send text.”
“What’s the weather?”
Chatbots are interactive:
They remember context, follow threads, reason through tasks, and act like an interface layer for your entire device.
That is the real leap Apple needs.
Built into the OS, not an app
The key detail here: Apple doesn’t want Siri chatbot to be a standalone product.
Instead, it will be integrated across the iPhone’s operating system, meaning Siri becomes the default UI layer for interacting with your phone, apps, and workflows.
That is exactly how Apple can compete, not by launching an app that nobody downloads.
Two Siri upgrades are coming
According to Bloomberg, Apple is doing this in two steps:
Incremental Siri improvements in the coming months
These are not chatbot-level, more like “make Siri less annoying and more usable.”The full Siri chatbot upgrade later this year
This is the real headline, and it’s expected to be much more advanced.
Powered by Google AI models
This is the wild part.
Bloomberg says both updates will be powered by Google $GOOGL ( ▲ 0.66% ) AI models, and the chatbot upgrade will be closer to Gemini 3 level capability.
So Apple might be rebuilding Siri into a chatbot… using Google’s brain.
That is a big strategic signal: Apple is prioritizing speed and quality over pride.
Why this matters beyond iPhone
If Apple gets Siri chat right, it becomes the AI backbone for everything else Apple wants to ship:
iPhone and Mac
Future wearables
The rumored Apple “pin” wearable device
Once the chatbot becomes the interface, every Apple device becomes more “AI-native.”
Bottom line
Apple turning Siri into a chatbot is not a feature update.
It is Apple trying to redesign the entire iPhone interface around AI, because the current Siri model is not built for the ChatGPT era.
