Apple $AAPL ( ▼ 0.3% ) announced that its longtime AI head, John Giannandrea, will retire this spring at age 60. His exit comes as the company prepares to roll out its long-delayed, AI-powered Siri upgrade and brings in Microsoft $MSFT ( ▼ 0.05% ) executive Amar Subramanya to lead the effort.
Giannandrea oversaw years of Apple’s slower and more uneven push into generative AI while rivals poured billions into large language models, custom chips, and AI ecosystems. Apple has invested far less than its Big Tech peers and has comparatively little to show for it, which makes the timing and leadership change especially notable.
Apple framed the move as a turning point, saying it marks a new chapter in its commitment to shaping the future of AI for users everywhere.
