OpenAI’s ChatGPT is closing in on 900 million weekly active users, per a new report from The Information. That is up from 800 million in October and puts the Microsoft-backed chatbot $MSFT ( ▼ 0.05% ) far ahead of Google’s Gemini $GOOGL ( ▲ 0.72% ), which last reported 650 million monthly active users. ChatGPT’s monthly number is almost certainly much higher than its weekly figure.

But rapid scale does not mean OpenAI is relaxing. The Information notes that Google’s newest AI model has sparked a surge in Gemini app downloads and a faster rise in website traffic than what ChatGPT is currently seeing. Those momentum shifts have contributed to what some inside OpenAI describe as a “code red” moment for the company.
