D-Wave Quantum $QBTS ( ▲ 0.27% ) shares jumped after the company announced a trio of deals that push its quantum technology further into commercial and defense use. The news offers a potential breakthrough for a firm that has long said it struggled to win attention from the US government.

A big hardware win

D-Wave revealed it sold an Advantage2 quantum computer system for $20 million to Florida Atlantic University, marking its first full stand-alone sale of that model. The company also signed a $10 million, two-year quantum computing as a service deal with a Fortune 100 customer, adding another meaningful commercial contract to its pipeline.

These deals signal that customers are willing to pay real money for D-Wave’s annealing-based quantum systems, which focus on solving specialized optimization problems rather than the broader approach used by gate-based quantum computers.

Quantum meets missile defense

The headline-grabbing development was a partnership with Davidson Technologies and defense contractor Anduril Industries aimed at improving US air and missile defense planning. In a proof-of-concept project, D-Wave’s quantum technology was combined with Anduril’s simulations and Davidson’s modeling tools to tackle complex missile defense scenarios.

According to the company, the system delivered solutions at least 10 times faster than classical computing approaches, improved threat mitigation rates, and allowed for more successful intercepts in large-scale attack simulations. For a company seeking a foothold in national security work, those results could be a powerful calling card.

A long-awaited government opening

D-Wave has often said it felt sidelined as US agencies focused funding and contracts on gate-based quantum competitors. These new defense-related partnerships suggest that its annealing approach may now be getting a closer look for practical, near-term applications.

If follow-on contracts materialize, D-Wave $QBTS ( ▲ 0.27% ) could transition from being a niche quantum player to a more established supplier in both commercial
