Disney $DIS ( ▲ 0.75% ) is inching closer to another billion dollar hit after Avatar Fire and Ash delivered a massive $345 million global opening weekend. That debut puts Disney on track for its third billion dollar film of the year and lifts total box office sales to roughly $5.8 billion worldwide so far in 2025.
Big abroad, softer at home
About 75 percent of Fire and Ash’s opening came from international markets, which is right in line with prior Avatar releases. Domestic ticket sales landed at roughly $88 million, a bit below expectations but still strong enough to rank as the second biggest global opening of the year, behind Disney’s own Zootopia 2.
Premium screens do the heavy lifting
The film was the widest IMAX $IMAX ( ▲ 0.43% ) release ever, playing on more than 1,700 screens globally and generating $43.6 million through the format alone. Premium formats accounted for a large share of overall sales, reinforcing that audiences are still willing to pay up for blockbuster spectacle when the franchise is right.
Another banner year for Disney
With Avatar Fire and Ash gaining momentum and Zootopia 2 already past the billion dollar mark, Disney is closing in on $6 billion in global box office revenue for the year. Even with a lighter domestic start, repeat viewings and holiday traffic could easily push Fire and Ash into blockbuster territory over the coming weeks.
