Streaming just set another record and it’s officially eating TV alive.
In December, streaming accounted for 47.5% of all TV-watching time, according to Nielsen, topping the previous record of 47.3% set back in July.
Google $GOOGL ( ▼ 2.08% ) ’s YouTube stayed the #1 streaming platform by time spent, but its share slipped slightly to 12.7% from 13.4% in July.
Netflix $NFLX ( ▲ 0.05% )
quietly gained ground too, with its share rising to 9% from 8.8%, helped by a big spike in viewing from Stranger Things, which became the most watched streaming title last month.
Bottom line: streaming is basically half of TV now, and YouTube is still winning the time-spent war, even as Netflix shows it can still pull massive attention when it drops a true blockbuster.
